Comtech Troposcatter Family of Systems: Introduction

Troposcatter Defense and Security Introduction

For nearly 50 years, Comtech has designed, developed, and delivered market leading Beyond Line-of-Sight (BLOS) systems sought out by U.S. military customers, coalition forces, and other government agencies around the world. As a leader in BLOS communications technologies, Comtech is expanding the company’s innovative Troposcatter Family of Systems (FoS) to meet customers’ evolving needs and significantly enhance mission effectiveness across all domains. Troposcatter systems help ensure critical voice and data communications are transmitted securely when other communications solutions are denied.

Today, Comtech provides advanced, multi-megabit, Troposcatter technologies, and the company delivers more mobile and fixed Troposcatter capabilities than any other manufacturer in the world. With the focus of connecting the unconnected and bridging the digital divide, Comtech is delivering scenario-based Troposcatter technologies for missions requiring always-on communications capabilities.

Troposcatter systems today provide resilient, secure, and low latency Over the Horizon communications across long ranges. Troposcatter systems are sought out by a variety of government and military customers given their ability to complement and operate independently from space ( satellite ) assets. Comtech’s Troposcatter FoS consists of a range of next generation expeditionary terminals that are optimized in size, pack out, and extended range while sharing common components, operations functionality, and logistical support requirements.

Comtech’s expanding Troposcatter FoS offer customers a variety of customized options designed to meet unique mission needs. Comtech’s small form factor terminal provides medium range BLOS communications. The medium offering in Comtech’s Troposcatter FoS is the Modular Transportable Transmission System (MTTS-PLUS) Dual Polarization Diversity terminal. The Large offering in the Troposcatter FoS is the Modular Transportable Transmission System (MTTS-PLUS) Quad Diversity terminal.

Comtech’s Troposcatter FoS utilizes the company’s state-of-the-art CS67PLUS radio modem. The CS67PLUS is a Software Defined Radio (SDR) that is frequency agile between 70MHz and 6GHz and includes key features such as Adaptive Coding and Modulation (ACM), Automatic Link Power Control (ALPC), and Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS) technologies that reduce RF signature and enhance data throughput. Comtech’s Troposcatter FoS are the ideal backbone solution for providing critical voice, video, and data services in support of missions that require high bandwidth communications over mountains, through urban environments, or Over the Horizon in the event of congested, contested, or denied space environments.

Comtech’s portfolio of defense and security technologies, including the company’s Troposcatter FoS, are uniquely positioned to deliver capabilities that will enhance Combined Joint All Domain Command and Control (CJADC2) operations. The company has extensive experience developing and deploying customized, interoperable, robust, and resilient communications systems for all branches of the DOD and coalition forces. Comtech’s expansive portfolio of defense and security technologies is designed to continuously evolve over time to meet emerging Command, Control, Computers, Communications, Cyber, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (C5ISR) use cases and enhance mission effectiveness in future all domain command and control operations.

This article is the first in a series that will focus on important Troposcatter use cases including: Relay Link Replacement, Troposcatter Communications on the Move, Obstructed Line of Sight Communications, Operations in Contested/Congested Satellite Environments, and Extension of Services.
